Dear Dr Paganoni,

EUAsiaGrid and AMBIS

As the President of AMBIS, I would like to thank you personally for helping us run the highly successful Grid BioWorkshop which we co-sponsored.

As an association with a longstanding pioneering role in the introduction of bioinformatics and medical informatics in Singapore and in the region, with a key role in the founding of the Asia Pacific Association for Medical Informatics (APAMI), and with our former President Professor KC Lun being the President of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA), we have been concerned with the lack of computational expertise amongst our members.

Your organisation's key role in providing the infrastructure to support high performance computing in the sciences, represents a fundamental asset and a cornerstone for our work. Without such an advanced computational framework which can catalyse the much needed change in our community, our work will be set back by decades.

In conjunction with the Federation of Asian and Oceanian Biochemists and Molecular Biologists (FAOBMB), through the local organising committee, we are planning to get our key members to conduct a workshop on bioinformatics and computational biology on the Grid. This workshop will be co-organised by the Asia Pacific Bioinformatics Network (APBioNet) and us as a satellite workshop of the FAOBMB Conference scheduled for October next year in Singapore. All key permissions have been obtained by the parties concerned. We need your cooperation and permission for us to hold the workshop using your vast computing resources. We on our part will gather all our members to encourage their organisations to participate in EUAsiaGrid and to support your outstanding effort to outreach to all other countries in our region.

Looking forward to your favourable response.

Yours sincerely

Dr Rick Chan, President, AMBIS
